The text offers a reading of sociocultural and literary phenomena, unfolding in the French Belle Époque, based on the uses of the bucolic code and the transcriptions of the pastoral. I analyze the production of new bucolic loci, as well as the multiplicity of their meanings / significations that shape through their deployment in the registers of high and popular culture alike and in the phenomena generated by the interaction between them.

Екзотична еротика – европейското чуждо като другото свое

The paper discusses the construction of the concept of the oriental woman (the exotic “other” woman) in West European paintings and literature. It analyses the ways and means through which “Eastern erotica” develops into a cultural mythologem as well as the reasons why the erotic is increasingly used in the construction of the concept of the exotic in West European art in the 18th and 19th century. What is also given thought and careful consideration is the specificity of the Romantic notions of exoticism and exotic local colour (exotisme et couleur locale exotique).

The text discusses one aspect of the receptive horizon of Bulgarian literature – the lack of active reception of such writers as Thèophile Gautier, Henri de Régnier, and Andrè Gides. The focus falls on their works which reveal a modern way of working with the pastoral code and their absence in receptive circles in our country; on the feeble interest our literature (and reading public) displays towards the pastoral in its “classical” and modern shape. The observations here are limited mostly to the cultural processes from the first half of the 20th century but I also touch upon the contemporary reception in Bulgarian translation of pastoral works as well as the critical reception of writers such as Kiril Merdzhanski.

Joie de vivre – вариации по тема

The study focuses on some emblematic variations on the theme of joie de vivre discernible with French Belle Époque writers and among representatives of the Russian Silver Age. The discussion also touches upon the manifestations of the overarching theme in the advertising industry, which constructs the consumers’ “paradise”. The delineated dialogues, which appear along the lines of the gallant feasts (fête galante), the isle of Cythère, the Golden Age, idyll and Harlequinade, develop in contexts that are marked simultaneously by resonating similarities and by divergent cultural, historical, and national particularities that account for their specific nuances.

Carmina Figurata

The article focuses on the figure poems of Hellenism and on the figure notations of composers from the “Ars subtilior” movement. It discusses the modern experiments with the written word, created during Hellenism and then in the 14th-15th centuries, as they reveal the synthesis between the verbal, visual and auditory. Thereafter and against this tradition, the paper touches upon modern experiments from the 20th century in the works of Erik Satie and “Notations” by John Cage.
